Healthcare System Begins Its Sustainability Journey
Ochsner Health System began their sustainability journey with a new position within the organization and needed outside assistance to help create a strategic vision and plan. Because the individual leading the initiative was hired from within, they sought additional expertise and knowledge in the community to support their transformative goals.
LifeCity was hired to support sustainability at Ochsner by providing baseline metrics to leverage for informative decision making. We conducted two waste audits at the two largest hospitals in the area, capturing best-practices and opportunities to improve outcomes that lead to cost savings.
LifeCity conducted our assessment by pulling out trash samples from every dumpster, categorizing the waste, and creating a rough baseline waste profile for each location. We also interviewed staff and followed team members responsible for removing waste from within each building.
Throughout our assessment process, we discovered $890K in savings opportunities. This report serves as a baseline resource for strategic decision making with regards to waste management that can be immediately felt by staff, customers, and visitors.
Savings included:
Reducing linen waste
Reducing red bag waste (dependent on cost structure)
Increasing cardboard recycling
Reducing contamination through improved signage and training
Increasing reprocessing and reuse through certain devices
Reducing turnover through employee engagement programs.
With these best practices in mind, LifeCity currently helps Ochsner track their progress in improving waste diverted from the landfill and cost savings through our sustainability software.
