About

LIFECITY

LifeCity was founded on the belief that sustainability is more than a checklist; it should be deeply connected to the people and places it serves. We support clients across industries and the public sector, from healthcare to hospitality, manufacturing to mission-driven events. Our services include waste assessments and audits, sustainability goal setting, impact reporting, video storytelling, and our custom-built Love Your City ™ software dashboard. Everything we do is grounded in research, shaped by local context, and driven by a human-centered approach. Whether you are an investor, company, or community developer, LifeCity is here to help tell your story.

Our Mission

Our mission is to build an economy that works for good by helping organizations track, report, and market their positive community impact.

Our Vision

Our vision is to build a trusted, global network of place-based sustainable businesses that can tackle our most pressing social and environmental challenges.

OUR STORY

LifeCity began in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, when our founder, Liz Shephard, came to New Orleans to support the city’s recovery. She saw something powerful unfolding: countless organizations working to rebuild a better, more sustainable city. Liz recognized the need for collaboration and connection between these businesses, and she took action.

In 2011, she launched a “Green Directory” that highlighted local businesses committed to sustainability. That directory quickly grew into a membership model where companies could access guidance and services to implement greener practices rooted in science and accountability. She created an impact assessment using best practices in the field, which allowed her to easily advise businesses to make social and environmental improvements.

As more organizations joined, their needs evolved. One asked for help telling the story of their community impact. Another needed support in turning audit results into a strategy. In response, LifeCity’s work expanded from listing purpose-driven businesses to helping them measure, manage, and communicate their impact, not just as businesses, but investors for New Markets Tax Credits.

In 2016, with funding from the Greater New Orleans Foundation, LifeCity convened regional experts to identify the most impactful sustainability strategies for our local context. This effort led to the creation of the Love Your City initiative, which today powers our software and public recognition programs.

Instead of living in a world driven primarily by profit, LifeCity seeks to support organizations in building a world driven by purpose.

Our story is rooted in New Orleans, but our impact reaches far beyond. We remain guided by the principles that shaped us: place-based research, community collaboration, and radical authenticity. We’re here to help organizations of all sizes align their values with their actions because sustainability is not just about compliance or carbon. It’s about people, systems, and the shared future we’re building together.
