Hilton Hotel Reduces Waste & Increases Sustainability
The Hilton New Orleans Riverside is the largest hotel in downtown, connected by a walkway to The Outlet Collection at Riverwalk and overlooking the Mississippi River. When a new Director of Property Operations, Marvin Dixon, joined the hotel, he wanted to start new sustainability or green initiatives, but needed support discovering the local network that could help.
First by attending one of our Impact Officer Roundtable meetings, Marvin was able to connect to the right service providers and best practices that could support his goals. We attended team green meetings, helped track data, and market their success to the local community, which lead to multiple forms of community recognition and awards.
The success of our work together in just 5 months shifted the waste to landfill diversion rate from 9.8% to 41.0% diverted materials, for a total of 640,549 lbs of material put back into our economy.
The hotel and its leadership are inspired by the incredible success the increased composting and recycling did to attract new clients. More and more group bookings are requiring sustainable standards that the hotel can now meet.
Going beyond our success at the Hilton, the sustainability team is eager to share their knowledge with other hotels, and is developing tours of their composting process with the Love Your City team to bring people behind the scenes. These educational opportunities will create ripples of impact for the City of New Orleans.
