LifeCity Commits to Tracking and Offsetting Carbon Consumption

As the landscape on what a company is responsible for continues to change, LifeCity aims to stay ahead of the curve with its new goal of offsetting its 2023 carbon footprint in 2024. To achieve this goal, we are tracking our electricity usage, transportation metrics, and waste consumption to come up with an ultimate carbon footprint for the company. On March 6th, the SEC ruled that all U.S public companies must disclose only their scope one and scope two emissions. LifeCity has decided to go a step further and include scope three in its own emissions total to best represent our impact for the year. What this means is that we will include our emissions from “assets that are not owned or controlled” by our organization. These emissions can include air travel on other companies' planes and emissions from LifeCity employee commutes. 

Once the total is calculated, the next question becomes what is the best way to offset the carbon. Carbon offsetting is a controversial and imperfect system, but we decided it is one way to counteract LifeCity’s carbon emissions, in addition to efforts to reduce total carbon consumption. By volunteering with and donating to organizations who actively improve the state of the environment, we are attempting to offset the carbon that we release during our business operations. These activities may include coastal wetland restoration or planting trees. Through these actions, LifeCity is aiming to strive toward net zero and hopefully beyond on our carbon emissions from 2023. 

Going forward, LifeCity commits to working toward lowering its emissions and voluntarily offsetting what it does emit. We will continue tracking our progress and emissions in the Love your City app to show both how we are reducing and offsetting emissions and how we are tracking these metrics. It is important to our company to support our community and ultimately leave a net positive impact on the environment. As we continue with this initiative, we will continue to update our progress on the LifeCity blog and in the Love your City app.
