We sat down with Katie VanDeventer, Progressive's green scene liaison, to hear about what their organization has done lately to promote a more sustainable New Orleans.
What are some of your proudest moments as owner/employee of Progressive Waste Solutions?As an employee, my proudest moments recently have been the addition of curbside recycling for residents of the French quarter and Central Business District, and our partnership with the Saints to conduct a recycling challenge throughout over 30 school in the GNO area. How does your organization go about improving your social and environmental impacts? We provide access to commercial recycling to all businesses in the GNO area. We have an expanding fleet of natural gas powered garbage trucks that help keep our city green and clean. What partnerships have you formed in order to leverage sustainable impact as a company? We enjoy a partnership with Lifecity as well as the City of New Orleans, Jefferson Parish, and other municipalities. LifeCity members can receive a 10% discount on their recycling service to make being green just that much easier. If you had a magic wand to change one thing that would make it easier for your company or other companies to go green, what would that thing be? If I had a magic wand, all members of our community would have a basic recycling knowledge and an appreciation for the importance of their participation in recycling programs. What advice would you give to other businesses who are trying to improve their internal practices to benefit their city and state? Consider a triple bottom line - it's not ALL about the money.
