You got it. LifeCity members compete annually in improving and proving their social and environmental impact. The Awards Ceremony is a partnership between LifeCity, the New Orleans Chamber of Commerce and Natural Awakenings Magazine to recognize sustainable business leaders in New Orleans.
What are the Green Natties? (Also why is it called the Natties?)
The Green Natties is the award ceremony of the Green Games, in which we recognize the most sustainable business members in our community.
The “Natties Awards” is to natural as the “Addy Awards” is to advertising.
How are the candidates chosen?
An independent panel of sustainability experts, community leaders, & business owners chooses winners in each category based on their efforts to improve their social and environmental impact in the city of the New Orleans. Each category has two winners, one for most improved, and one for best overall. The selection committee reviews the surveys submitted by each participant as well as the data provided by LifeCity’s baseline assessment. They then use Green Games Judges Rubric_April 2014 to rate the profiles and meet as a group to then review the ratings and finalize the winners. This year’s Selection Committee included the following judges:
- Susan Guidry, New Orleans City Council
- Charles Allen, Director of Coastal and Environmental Affairs, City of New Orleans
- Grasshopper Mendoza & Steve Picou of NOLA Vibe
- Victoria Adams, Director of Content Startegy, the Idea Village
- Shannon Stage, Executive Director, US Green Building Council Louisiana Chapter
What are the categories?
LifeCity members can qualify for “Most Improved” and “Best Overall” in any of the following categories: Restaurants, Schools, Offices, Non-Profits, Retail, Services, & Hotels/Hospitality.
Are any types of companies excluded from the Green Games?
No, LifeCity works with any organization in the office, restaurant, hotel, school, retail, and service categories to help them improve their social and environmental impact. If a company on their own accord or by the opinion of others is not considered to be environmental organization, LifeCity will still work with these companies. One of the first and most important values at LifeCity is inclusivity. We don’t feel that we can maximize our impact by limiting the companies we work with. Our job is to treat every company individually and help them take the next step forward. Its not where you are, its where you are going that matters to us. Its not where you are today, but how you improve every year. We recognize those businesses who deserve recognition for their overall leadership in sustainability and also those organizations who have taken significant steps forward as “most improved” during our ceremony.
Can a company sponsor and also win an award?
The process for sponsorship and the process for winning an award are completely separate. However, we encourage all sponsors to also participate in the Green Games so that they show commitment to social, environmental, and economic sustainability in their practices, not just in their investments. Sponsors from large corporations are also identified by their local departments so that we believe in building relationships with local organizational leaders, especially when companies are large. The Selection Committee does not know who is sponsoring the awards for the Green Games so this does not influence their decision.
Give me the deets.
For the third year in a row, we’re holding the awards at the Eiffel Society on St. Charles Ave. on Thursday, May 15, from 7pm to 10pm.
And the price?
Tickets for business members cost $20.00. Non-members pay $35 before May 1, $40 after, and $50 at the door. LifeCity Business Members and staff can buy tickets at $20. Tickets will be available through the New Orleans Chamber of Commerce.
Aren’t award ceremonies really boring?
Yes, if you think live local music, tasty drinks, a delicious dinner, rollicking fun and Eiffel Towers is boring. Not to mention our amazing host for the night – Tank and the Bangas! But if you like enjoying those things while supporting the growth of sustainable businesses in New Orleans, you’ll love the Green Natties!
I’m so into this that I want to help make it happen. How do I do that?
You’re in luck, sponsorships and volunteer spots are available! Contact Meryl at firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
