LifeCity recently returned from the Presidio Institute in San Francisco, where we met with cross-sector leaders from all over the country to explore ways to support the development of for-benefit solutions to our world’s greatest challenges. From economic growth, to access to health care, to affordable housing, the summit explored creative ways to leverage private sector solutions to social challenges. With 8 tracks to choose from, over 300 participants spent a full day exploring specific solutions. LifeCity participated in the Place-based Initiative track, where we shared the success of Value Louisiana – and our early stages of for-benefit development throughout the state.
The conference was co-hosted by the White House Investing in Manufacturing Communities Partnership, the Presidio Institute, Stanford PACS (Center on Philanthropy and Civil Society), the California Economic Summit, the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, the Fourth Sector Network, and ASHOKA, among others.
Major outcomes of the conference were commitments to working across national networks to support place-based initiatives. The State of the USA has made a commitment to support the Value Louisiana Initiative with web support. The Value Louisiana Initiative continues to wait to hear from the federal government regarding our application to be a Designated Manufacturing Community with our LSU partners. If our community wins the designation among 24 communities across the country (12 already designated), we will have preferential funding opportunities from the federal government. Luckily, the IMCP effort is very interested in for-benefit development, positioning Louisiana as an ideal place to leverage federal dollars through our innovative, cross-sector Initiative.
The conference coincided with Value Louisiana’s final Steering Committee meeting to create a plan to grow for-benefit organizations throughout the State. This plan includes a consolidated training calendar for for-benefit organizations as well as sought after partnership with Jazz Fest – perhaps our most popular for-benefit in the State! Congratulations to our 20+ organizational partners for contributing to this plan and making commitments!
