Carbon Offsets

A company can offset its carbon emissions through its product or service, or through purchasing carbon offsets from a certified agency. Purchasing carbon offsets is an investment in projects that reduce the emission of greenhouse gases in the short- or long-term.  One carbon offset represents the reduction of one metric ton of carbon dioxide or its equivalent in other greenhouse gases.

Why this Matters

For My Organization

The production of greenhouse gases contributes to global warming. By changing organizational behavior or purchasing offsets, an organization can protect the environment and health of its community. It is also often illegal to produce gases over a certain amount, so for compliance reasons, companies will purchase carbon offsets to avoid fines.

For New Orleans

New Orleans is among the top 10 cities most likely to experience severe early effects of climate change caused by global warming; reducing carbon emissions that contribute to global warming helps to preserve New Orleans.

Depends on size of offset.
