Through the leadership of the community of Certified B Corps, laws have been passed in 11 states (and are moving forward in 16 more) creating a new type of corporation—the benefit corporation—that best meets the needs of entrepreneurs and investors seeking to use business to solve social and environmental problems.
Why this Matters
For My Organization
Certified B Corporations are leading a global movement to redefine success in business. By voluntarily meeting higher standards of transparency, accountability, and performance, Certified B Corps are distinguishing themselves in a cluttered marketplace by offering a positive vision of a better way to do business.
For New Orleans
In a unanimous Senate floor vote in June of 2012, Louisiana became the eighth state in the nation, and the first in the South, to enact benefit corporation legislation. The new law, which went into effect August 15th, has the potential to attract millions of dollars in revenue to the state, which has struggled to recover since Hurricane Katrina.
