3rd ANNUAL GREEN GAMES BEGIN IN NEW ORLEANS
First-of-its-kind Competition Challenges Local Organizations to find green savings that benefit the environment and the bottom line
NEW ORLEANS, LA — On Thursday, November 21, 2013, LifeCity will host the 3rd Annual Gumbo Green Games Launch Party at the Bayou Beer Garden in MidCity. The Green Games is the only green business competition of its kind brought to you by LifeCity, Natural Awakenings Magazine, and the New Orleans Chamber Foundation.
“This is about taking a step in the right direction,” said LifeCity President Elizabeth Shephard. “Many businesses think going green is an expensive proposition, but not only can it be inexpensive, it is often profitable, especially when done through a powerful network of partners.”
Shephard started LifeCity to support the development of green businesses in Louisiana, while educating citizens about green products and services in a cost-efficient way; however, the competition works not only for businesses, but also schools, non-profits, and government organizations. The Green Games is a sustainability or “green” competition that focuses on energy management, building design, water use, waste recovery, and community impact.
Over the next sixth months, LifeCity will follow over 100 organizations in our region as they set sustainability goals and measure their improvements over time. In May, the Green Games will culminate in an awards ceremony, The Green Natties, to recognize the organizations that have been most successful. Lolita Werhan, Publisher of Natural Awakenings Magazine, reflects on last year’s competition.
“I believe in supporting an economy that promotes healthy living through environmentally sound practices by businesses and individuals. The sustainable business sector is gaining as a driver of economic growth and we hoped that the Green Games would encourage even more businesses and organizations to move in that direction. At the same time we wanted to recognize those who were already striving toward sustainability. It’s been inspiring to see the efforts so many local businesses and organizations have put into this process, and I look forward to what comes of this year.”
The Launch Party will take place at the Bayou Beer Garden from 5-7pm. Attendees will learn about the Green Games while toasting to this year’s participants with amazingly fresh, delicious and healthy juices from Raw Republic. Businesses can register for the Green Games now.
LifeCity is a membership-based organization that seeks to ensure that businesses that want to go green have the support to do so, and businesses that claim to be green, are truly implementing socially and environmentally responsible practices.
